This is a common problem with Windows (any version). Affiliate link will open in a new window and we may earn a commission from what ever you buy. It usually doesn’t do this when you first install a fresh copy of Windows, but after a few weeks of installing programs and loading your HDD or SSD with information, it gets bogged up. A few things I’d recommend to help prevent this from happening is listed below.
1st solution:
If you are Googling this from your phone, simply hold down on the power button of your PC until it shuts down, then let go of the power button.
2nd solution:
Turn off the “fast startup feature”, and to do this you just open your Settings window, click on Power & Sleep, Additional Power Settings, choose which option you want the power button to do, then click Change settings which are currently unavailable. Make sure you check your Windows Updates in Settings to make sure everything is updated.
3rd solution:
If you have programs running in the background, like an Antivirus or Anti-Malware etc., close everything before you shut down, you might have to do this every time until you figure out the problem, but this has worked for me.
4th solution:
Make sure you have the latest Windows 10/11 version in Windows Update. Go to Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update and check what it says in the middle area, if it says your up to date then don’t worry about that and close that window. If it recommends updating to Windows 11, do not click on that if you don’t want it. Honestly Windows 11 is still buggy and I’d recommend staying with Windows 10 for now.
5th solution:
Try repairing your Windows 10 or 11 system files. Simply open your command prompt or PowerShell as administrator then run “sfc /scannow”, which will fix corrupted system files. If the SFC fails to run properly or it cannot repair the files, try running “DISM /Online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth” to fix any remaining problems.
6th solution:
In the startup menu, type in “cmd” and then right click on it and “Run As Administrator”. in the command line type “shutdown /p” and then hit “Enter”. I believe your system will shut down now without installing or processing any updates.
7th solution:
Open your Task Manager by holding CTRL + ALT + DEL and then click on the “Startup” tab. Choose the app that you want to control or disable and right click on it, then click on “Disable” and that will disable the Startup app.
Anyways, I hope that helped you in figuring out the problem with your Windows machine not shutting down properly, maybe try leaving a comment down below if you can’t figure the problem out yet and I’ll do my best to help.
