I’ve been using all three operating systems ever since I was first introduced my family’s first computer in the early 90’s. My first computer was actually a Mac, which ran Mac OS 9 at the time, and I knew nothing about blogging at that time since I was just a kid, the internet was just becoming something big, and dial up made it a pain in the butt to browse the interwebs. It wasn’t until 2003 that the internet was actually fast, since we upgraded to DSL internet through our ISP. Now we’ve got optic internet and everything just loads instantly.
But aside from the internet being super fast now-a-days, is that you have a choice between three operating systems to start blogging. See the image above, Linux is free, Windows costs around $25 with a key from eBaY or other sources, then Mac OS X is free if you already have a Mac. The cheapest Mac is a Mac Mini and cheapest Mac laptop is the MacBook Air. Well, let me explain the advantages of all three operating systems all down below this paragraph.
Linux
Linux is basically a free operating system that comes in many different variants. There is Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Chrome OS and even more than that. Ubuntu is the most popular option for a Linux OS to use, but I personally like Debian a little more. The best part of Linux is that there isn’t really any threats out there for these open-source OS’s. You can build a computer for Linux and it will probably work on your hardware, or you can buy a laptop and it will probably work. You can even install Linux onto a Mac or Windows laptop and it will probably work. Anyways, the biggest advantage of Linux is that it works on any type of hardware AND it’s nearly virus free…. or bomb proof lol. Oh I also forgot to mention there are Chromebooks out there which run Chrome OS and these are great for blogging if you don’t mind the learning curve. These are very basic, easy to use machines and even older people can learn how to use them. These Chromebooks are running Linux and Google designed them in the first place, basically there is more support for printers if that’s important to you and they are basically designed for school mainly, or just general web browsing. If you have supported hardware you can optionally install Chrome OS onto a desktop computer but with some difficulty.
Windows
As I write this I am currently using a Windows computer, I mainly use Windows for games to be honest and also, I have to be honest that I might be getting a Mac eventually depending on things. They are expensive and I will get into that in the bottom option (Mac’s is the label, check it out in the paragraph below). Anyways, Windows is the biggest fish when it comes to operating systems and these “bigger fish” tend to be picked on more than the rest because of their popularity. The best thing about Windows computers is that they are usually customizable, and you can play a huge range of different games on them. As long as you don’t go to shady websites or read phishing emails and click on those links you should be okay, I’ve been alright for the past few years after learning a few lessons from getting malware and viruses on my past computers. But, I just don’t like the risk anymore and I want to upgrade to something different, I probably will keep my gaming PC but it will go into my closet when that new Mac Mini or Mac Studio shows up in the mail after ordering one brand new or maybe used off eBaY (not sure yet where I am going to find one yet). The best part of Windows, I will say again, is that my PC that I have now was all built by myself and if anything fails, I can replace it with a new part without sending the whole thing away. Maybe I am better off using Linux but, for now this is my decision as Mac’s support most printers and devices while Linux is a big tricky with that. If you do decide to get a Windows computer for blogging, please get Antivirus or Internet Security here. (We may earn a commission from you purchasing from Amazon).
Mac’s
People always say “Mac’s are too expensive”, etc. etc. but the more I heard that in the early 2000’s the less I heard it later on in todays age up until now, where most people in internet cafe’s, libraries, schools, and more, are using MacBooks, Mac Mini’s, Mac Pro’s, and more. It might be because I used a Mac for most of my childhood life that I want to own a Mac again but, it’s not just because of that experience, it’s because they use Unix, and it’s just so much easier to use than a PC. They don’t get viruses as easily as Windows computers do, and there is everything you need to start a blog anyways. Filezilla works on Mac, I can still play Starcraft 2 on a Mac, and my printer will also work with a Mac. I am sure there is going to be a few Mac haters in the comments but I am okay with that. The new Apple silicon computers will definitely be a huge upgrade from Windows in the future, and I am sure they will support running Windows in the future too. Though, I am not too sure yet if I want to get a Mac Mini or a Macbook Air, I guess I will have to weigh the pros and cons in the future and see whats cheaper and more reliable for me.
Conclusion
What ever you choose, if you decide to choose Windows, please, PLEASE get at least a free antivirus. If you go without for a long time you will notice problems. What ever you do, only buy antivirus out of a box at a store like Wal-Mart or London Drugs, StackSocial.com, etc. If you download it from the vendors website and give them your credit card number they might ding you again and again when you never signed up for that in the first place. Do you research, be smart. Think carefully.
