I actually was given a MacBook (affiliate link, we may earn a commission from what ever you buy from Amazon) from 2009 once, which the original owner had spilled Iced Tea on the keyboard. I then tested it and noticed the screen doesn’t come on, though the external screen did work at the time. I brought it to an Authorized Apple Dealer and for $70 CAD they basically told me the logic board needed replacing and it would cost $700 to replace it, while also saying “you might as well get a new laptop I guess”, and from there I just took the laptop back to my place and sold it for parts on eBaY.
Well, a friend of mine with a MacBook Pro had the same situation as me, and I told him what I did. Here is his description of the problem in his own situation:
“I went to turn on my 2015 MacBook Pro and it went turn on at all hold power button doesn’t do anything I have disconnected the battery reconnected still didn’t work but I just saw that when I hold shift + control + option + power button for 10 seconds the charger goes green then back to orange so it is doing something but displaying nothing or the screen or the back logo or the keyboard no lights at all besides the charger can someone please help me thanks”.
Oh I forgot to mention that I took the hard drive out first of course, and after that I just took the money and put it towards a new laptop. Another option would be to buy a reconditioned logic board then replace the old logic board with that one, which my own dad has had success with it. Though if you have never opened up a laptop before I wouldn’t recommend trying, maybe find a friend who knows how to do it, or bring it to someone who works on Mac laptops to do it for you and pay them for their labor.
What you should do from the very beginning is get the extended Apple Care coverage for the laptop so your covered if something happens in the first 2-3 years of owning it. I, personally, treat my electronics with care, so I have never really had a problem with anything failing. These things usually only happen when you don’t treat what ever you bought with care. Of course, accidents happen, though, and the only thing that ever happened to me was once I dropped a Samsung Galaxy smartphone in the toilet, that was embarrassing, but I just let it dry out in my locker and it was fine.
Looking on eBaY, these logic boards for 2015 MacBook Pro’s are only under $90 each, so that might have been an option for him but it would be a 50/50 chance if it would work or not. There are many steps to replacing a logic board, many wires to disconnect, etc. So, if your in this situation, leave a commend down below on what you did to solve the problem and that would be great!.
