The Day I Discovered Blogging (2005ish)

I remember this day like it was only a few months ago. I was living with my parents at the time and was just Googling things like I normally do. I must have searched for something along the lines of “Online Jobs”, because I can’t think of anything else to search for to get this result that I found in that year of 2005. Or maybe it was a Youtube video that I discovered, maybe that was it. Because it was so long ago I can’t exactly say what led to me discovering this information. All I know is, it would change my perspective on making money for the next 19 years.

I never bothered to go to college, and I am sure there are quite a bit of college drop-outs out there that discovered either social media or websites as a way of making money. But, I never wanted to be, anything, or to even go to school, other than finish my Grade 12 GED just to get it over with to say that “I did it”. Maybe that sounds sad but, there are so many success stories out there now a days that prove that if you put an hour a day towards building a website, if done right, can earn you passive income every month for as long as the site is up.

Anyways, the success story that led to the discovery of making money online was… a Youtube video that was a woman who was basically saying that “Blogging changed my life”, something along the lines of that. She went on to say that she was looking for online jobs (was in her 30’s) and still living with her parents and loved Home Decor. So, she started a website on Home Decor and within a few months started making six figures (probably because there was not a lot of Home Decor websites out there already).

She made six figures from putting advertisements on her website, and that advertisement network company was made by Google. This was a really good story to hear about. I was excited to hear about this after watching that video I of course had to wait until I was 18 to be able to get a credit card and to be able to start a website with that credit card. And build a website I did. But I’ll get into that story in another post down the road.

In that video I said I found on Youtube, this woman went on to say she bought a house, and also some other things. Eventually I found a news article about this advertisement network that Google started which was called Adsense, and people were putting it on their websites and were making money (depending on how much traffic they were getting). I actually didn’t really know how much you could make from blogging until the 2010’s, and later into 2020’s the reality is, you can make more than some Youtubers out there, but it just depends on your niche and type of website that you run.

The success stories just kept on piling up and I knew, for sure, that this was what I wanted to do for a living, despite earnings being unpredictable, and looking at the earnings reports from people running these big websites or blogs, uncertainty is worth it… 1000%, as compared to working a normal job. Back in 1995 this kind of money was unheard of. People only dreamed of going to school to make good money. These days there is a good amount of people that know and are confident that this way of making money works and is achievable to anyone that can create a website or a Youtube channel etc.
