This is a question I’ve been asking myself for a few years now. It’s a really tricky question, but, it’s also very important if you decide that you want to make passive income somehow. The answer for me I believe is both, see what works, and maybe do both until you see the difference. I can’t honestly work myself away (spend all my time on one thing), and trust me, I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment. But basically, because I cannot answer this question for myself, I will probably need to do both Blogging and Youtube until I figure out which one is the best way to go.
I have been wanting that passive income for awhile now, and that’s been since 2008, which I explained that story of how I discovered blogging previously in 2005 in this post. Well, I have been thinking about it still up until this current day. I still want to do this, and I am not giving up. Seeing how much money people make from blogging is mind blowing. I can’t imagine making $10,000 per month, but people are achieving that. Then I see advertisements on Indeed showing salaries in that range for jobs I could not do, like a Train Conductor. What if the train derails?. There are risks to these high paying jobs. But running a business… that’s a different story. You don’t even need to rent out real estate for this kind of work, obviously.
Anyways, let’s get into the REAL comparison of Blogging VS Youtube.
Blogging (Starting a website)
Blogging is actually the first thing I discovered in 2005, and later on Youtube started monetizing their creators so I was confused on what to choose first. But after reading so much information on websites like Reddit or random Forums online, I have discovered you can make quite a bit from blogging despite the fact some Youtubers are buying their parents new cars and donating $10,000 to their grand parents (just a couple stupid examples of what they do with their money). I mean, I wish I could do that too, but would I rather write about that or vlog it?. Probably vlog it. I’ve seen many people who start a blog invest their money into savings and maybe buy a new car for themselves. I really haven’t seen Youtuber behavior in bloggers, maybe we’re the smarter ones. Anyways to get to the point, there are some advantages of having a blog. If you own a blog using a hosting company, you OWN that blog, where on Youtube you must be careful what you post because it could get taken down. Plus on Youtube, you have to monetize your videos using only Adsense, then you can use 30 second advertisements from sponsors either in the beginning, middle or end of your videos. I’ll get into that later. With Blogging (obviously with the use of WordPress), you can choose other ad networks like Mediavine, or Ad Thrive, and even more, those two ad networks make more money than Adsense alone. One downside of blogging is having to back up your site while running your business, because stuff happens. I would sign up for a service like Jetpack’s bundle for example. Then you can also get into affiliate marketing where you get paid for sale, and putting their ads on your blog which earns you even more money. The possibilities are endless with a blog, or just a website in particular. Another huge upside to Blogging is that you can simply use a keyboard and take it anywhere you want in the world that has an internet connection to update your blog and make your money virtually anywhere. I hope I included everything about blogging in this section of this post and if I want to add more later I will do that, Maybe I will sticky this post so that I know where to come back when I feel like it.

Youtube (Uploading videos)
I really have to say one thing right away and that is the ability to upload videos with no limit on storage is incredible, and useful, and is one huge upside to Youtube. I never thought of that one before until just thinking about it, but there are of course some limits to this ability of course, which is the type of content your uploading and yeah, with that there are restrictions you must watch out for, obviously. If your a video editor then Youtube is probably your place-to-be, but if you prefer to blog, re-read the above paragraph on the benefits of blogging. It really depends on what you want to do, and in the third paragraph of this post I will talk about doing both instead of just one or the other. You can see Mr. Beast and Pewdiepie making millions from Youtube which is definitely something that makes YT unique. But there are bloggers that are millionaires as well. I can’t really get into examples right now but if you Google it, you never know what information your going to find. Some of the information you might find might seem unrealistic, and that’s what’s keeping the majority of people working their regular jobs, because of those high numbers, they don’t believe it’s possible, or they are just afraid of change. I’ve met so many people like this. It’s kind of sad, too. We’re so used to the “9-5” or shift work that some people just don’t get it, don’t get how they can change their lives in just 1-3 years by putting their own work into their own business. I guess the last thing I’ll mention about Youtube is that people will obviously see your face and will notice you in public if you have a huge following. Maybe that’s why other Youtubers move to other countries to avoid being noticed much. But there are ways to avoid being seen and I will make a post on this in the future I promise.

Starting both a Blog and a Youtube channel
Starting off with both a Blog and a Youtube channel might be a bit more tricky than you think. You might be better off finding your niche first and figuring out if that given niche will work for both a Blog and Youtube. One niche that will work for this is….. *drum roll* WordPress Tutorials or Making Money Online. If you decide on two separate niches for Blogging and Youtube, you might confuse yourself, but it could work if all your doing is seeing which one is more successful than the other. I have done this and I get very impatient. I personally would rather focus on the niche that I love the most. With Youtube, for me it would mean games would be my niche and that would mean carrying around a huge gaming laptop everywhere I go which can work for some people. Not everyone travels but I am just saying if you do decide to do that, or you can just stay at home and use a gaming PC and never leave your place I guess. So yeah, your options are limitless if you decide to do both but how much work can you do in a given day?, on a daily basis?. Not many people have that much spare time, but if you do, maybe you can achieve that?. I personally have scattered posts and uploads so I can definitely say no to that and I’d rather just have one side hustle than two. There are a few examples out there of entrepreneurs that actually did both start a Blog and started a Youtube channel and were successful. If you link your audience to both your posts and your videos you may have success, and the multiple income sources are definitely nice to have instead of just one, at that point you can say you definitely didn’t put all your eggs into one basket!. So since the wisest decision is to diversify, I think I am going to do that.
