It has recently been reported that the SIM tray will be removed from iPhones starting with the “iPhone 15” in 2023, according to these reports. MacRumors was the first to report that Apple had already spoken to major US carriers about preparing for eSIM-only smartphones, which are expected to arrive in September 2022. This information was anonymous. Reliable Apple leaker @dylandkt confirmed this information on Twitter.
From a production standpoint, there are a few advantages to removing the smartphone’s physical SIM tray. First and foremost, the mechanism for ejecting and inserting a SIM tray would be eliminated, freeing up some much-needed interior space. The removal of the SIM tray would make it easier to keep water and dust out of a smartphone’s internals because there would be one fewer port.
Apple would be one step closer to a port-free iPhone if it removed the physical SIM slot from future models, following the company’s removal of the headphone jack and adoption of MagSafe accessories in recent years.
Dual-SIM functionality is available on iPhones from the most recent generation and later that support an eSIM in addition to a physical nanoSIM. Dual nanoSIM cards are supported by some iPhones sold in Hong Kong and China.
