I’ll be honest with you, I have been receiving these stupid emails for the past 5 years, and they’re all very similar, and they all use the same tactic. First of all, these emails almost always end up in my Junkmail folder (and I am using Outlook by Microsoft). The very first red flag is looking at where the email came from, which it says “[email protected]”, which is definitely not a domain that Meta owns.
Second of all, the “User ID” that was mentioned in the subject line is not my real name or user ID. The emails that it was sent to were a bunch of email addresses (not just my own email address). When I hover my cursor over the links in this email, it’s basically code to a fake website that looks like Facebook and it will ask you to enter your email address and password to where you can’t login at all and when you hit Enter on your keyboard, that email and password gets sent to the hacker or scammer. This is how a phishing email works. Below, you’ll see exactly where you need to go to check if the email you received in your junk mail is real or not.
If you click on your profile picture there is an arrow pointing down and then you go to Settings & Privacy, after that go to Settings, and then go to Accounts Center, which is where you’ll see the above menu. In this menu, simply click on Password and security, then you will see the option to see the following options: Where you’re logged in, Login alerts, Recent emails and Security checkup. I believe all these links will help you decide if the email you received is fake or not. Below you’ll see my recent emails that were sent to my email address, being just one from January 15th which did end up in my Inbox and not my Junkmail like the fake phishing email I got as well.
What you should do when you receive emails like these in your Junkmail, or even your Inbox, is to forward the email to “[email protected]” and then Facebook will deal with it. You can read all about this email address here, where it states that Facebook is definitely taking this seriously now and will investigate the email you received, but only if you forward it to them. Anyways, I recently did my part and Forwarded an email to that address, in hopes that I stop receiving these emails in the future. Maybe that won’t happen, I don’t really know. At least I tried if this doesn’t work. I hope my tips helped someone out there and leave a comment down below if you have received these emails as well.
