Here’s my main computer for the last 3-4 years. I bought it brand new right from Dell’s website. I think it was around $650ish (CAD funds). Anyways this will be my review of this computer. This computer came in many different models/configurations. I went with the 9th Gen Intel Core i5 9400 (which was sort of fast but, nothing impressive really). It also came with 8GB’s RAM which I upgraded to 16GB’s later on (Corsair RAM). It had built in Wi-Fi but I didn’t use it much really. It came with a standard 1 year warranty and I did so much to this computer that I probably voided the warranty within the first year of course. It was a pretty reliable machine so I wasn’t worried about that. You can still find this model of Inspiron on Amazon.ca here, prices may vary but this link here is an affiliate link and I may earn a commission from what ever you may buy.
The graphics were just a Intel UHD Graphics 630 with shared graphics memory which meant I would probably have to upgrade the PSU and GPU in order to be able to game on this thing. Oh yeah, it also came with a 1TB HDD which was really slow so I upgraded to a 1TB SSD and that worked pretty good for awhile. The DVD burner in this thing was very bad, I used it only a few times and it stopped working eventually. It also doesn’t make sense that it’s a “slim drive” because there was plenty of real estate to fit a proper 5.25″ optical drive, but what ever. Anyways, I was able to get GTA 5 to work on this machine after upgrading the PSU and GPU but that I will detail in another post.
In the post below, someone has made a video about what is upgradeable in this machine with a list of parts that are compatible (video description). So in this case, I wish you luck in upgrading this machine, but I still will be detailing what I purchased for this computer in another post. I was just reviewing the computer for what it was by default before any customizations were done.
It’s really hard to recommend this computer to anyone with there being so many limitations, and I honestly should of spent that $650 on something else. But at the time, I got $300 off this machine, it was originally about $938.99 CAD and I got it for exactly $673 CAD with free shipping. I believe it was a custom configuration so it took a good month or so to get shipped to my address, I guess they have to put it together and all that stuff. I have to say that Dell’s have a good reputation for being pretty reliable and will only stop working if you tear one open and mess around with it, that’s not a great idea and voids the warranty.
I only did open this machine to upgrade the RAM, PSU and GPU and it was a success because I have knowledge from fixing other computers as well. If your just looking for a machine to run your business, this computer would do the job, but if your into gaming or video editing, I’d look for something a bit faster like an XPS desktop or Optiplex etc. There was one thing I noticed in Windows 10 while using this machine which is while listening to music and web browsing, the music would skip with a ton of feedback sometimes (once in awhile), and I thought upgrading the RAM would fix this but this also happens on my newly built computer so I’m not sure what causes it. Anyways, hope you enjoyed my review, if you can get one of these desktops for cheap then I’d recommend giving it a shot!.
